Apple Music is preparing to introduce a mandatory labeling system for AI-generated music released on its platform. With the practice expected to roll out later in the year, users will be able to see whether the tracks they are listening to were created with AI assistance.
Under the regulation, content providers will be required to indicate in the system if a significant portion of a track was generated using AI platforms such as Suno or Udio. Apple Music previously offered an optional transparency label; with the new step, this will become an official rule rather than being left to distributors’ discretion. The company has informed its publishing partners about the change.
The number of songs produced using AI tools is rapidly increasing on digital platforms. According to Deezer data, approximately 75,000 tracks created entirely by AI are uploaded to the platform every day, accounting for 44% of new daily uploads. The increase is also fueling debates over the originality of music and publishing rights.
Spotify had also begun labeling virtual accounts created with AI as “AI Persona” and had restricted these profiles from editorial playlists and recommendation algorithms. Apple Music’s practice aims to inform listeners about the source of content and make it easier to monitor the use of AI on the platform.
