The album Life is a Dream, consisting of works composed by Sir Anthony Hopkins over decades, topped the Official UK Classical Music Chart after being released under the Decca Classics label. Performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel, the album draws inspiration from Hopkins’ childhood memories, his family and the composers he admires.

Hopkins says that music was his first passion, while he is donating part of the proceeds from album sales to the United Nations Development Programme to support earthquake victims in Venezuela. The Independent writer Louis Chilton, meanwhile, described the album as “a wonderful pleasure that celebrates life.”

Why it matters

This result shows that Hopkins’ relationship with music is not merely a temporary pursuit, and that his decades-long work as a composer has found a response in the field of classical music. The album’s focus on childhood, family and admired composers suggests that its chart success is fuelled not only by the name of a well-known figure but also by a personal musical body of work. The performance of the pieces by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel demonstrates that this body of work has reached listeners through a professional interpretation. The donation of part of the sales proceeds to earthquake victims in Venezuela also shows that, alongside its cultural value, the album has a tangible dimension of solidarity; however, the report does not specify what share of the total proceeds was donated or the scope of the aid.
