AK Party Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik said that no adverse findings were detected in initial assessments following the earthquakes measuring 4.8 and 4.9 in Adana’s Saimbeyli district and the 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Osmaniye’s Sumbas district. Çelik stated that there had been no loss of life or health problems and that psychosocial support was being provided for the elderly and children.

Reminding that Adana and Osmaniye were affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes, Çelik said that Türkiye is an earthquake-prone country and that efforts to build earthquake-resistant cities were continuing. He noted that public teams were in the field 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Çelik reported that no damage had been identified at schools and said that education would continue unless there was any warning, adding that citizens should follow official statements.

Adana Governor Mustafa Yavuz announced that there had been no loss of life or property in the three earthquakes that occurred within approximately 20-25 minutes and that inspections at schools had been completed. Yavuz said that schools would open normally tomorrow and that AFAD teams would remain on standby throughout the night in Feke and Saimbeyli.

Why it matters

These statements show that the new tremors in Adana and Osmaniye, which were affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes, need to be monitored not only for immediate safety but also for the continuity of public services. While the continuation of education means that current assessments have found no conditions preventing schools from being used, it also highlights the decisive role of official warnings in daily life. Psychosocial support for older people and children indicates that an earthquake can have social effects even when there is no physical damage. The fact that AFAD teams are being kept on standby throughout the night shows that the focus is on maintaining response capacity, particularly in areas that were previously damaged. For citizens, the open question is whether subsequent official assessments will require any changes in the operation of education and other services.
