The AK Parti is working on a “health package” that would introduce clear standards for smoking and transfer the oversight of food supplements to the Ministry of Health. Once the work is complete, a bill of 20-25 articles will be submitted to the TBMM.
According to the draft, food supplements, which are currently classified as food products and therefore fall under the oversight of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, will be brought under the oversight of the Ministry of Health. The decision was driven by the fact that substances in the ingredients can cause health problems in organs such as the kidneys and liver:
- Production permits will be obtained from the Ministry of Health.
- The ministry will decide which substances may be used and in what proportions.
- The accuracy of the contents declared on the label will be inspected during the production stage and after the product is placed on the market.
As for the smoking regulation, new standards will be introduced for areas that turn into enclosed spaces in winter with heaters and awnings. Businesses will designate a separate smoking section where no food or drink is served, or an open area; space will also be reserved for non-smokers in open areas. Smoking will be banned within a certain distance of hospital gardens, emergency department entrances, places of worship, schools, and sports facilities frequented by children; discussions regarding the distance are ongoing. Inspections will be tightened.
