Anahtar Parti Chairman Yavuz Ağıralioğlu announced that they would provide students with at least one healthy meal every school day, starting from preschool. In his post, Ağıralioğlu stated that some children go to school with lunchboxes while others go with empty bags, arguing that this undermines equal opportunity in education. Ağıralioğlu said the program would consist of meals containing protein, vegetables and fruit, and stated that inadequate nutrition affects children’s mental and physical development. He said the implementation would require approximately 150 billion lira for 17 million children, corresponding to approximately two per thousand of Turkey’s annual national income and less than one percent of the central government budget. Ağıralioğlu stated that farmers and cooperatives in Anadolu would be included in the system, adding that the goal was to use local produce, milk, eggs, fruit and products with geographical indications, while providing farmers with a market and support for cooperatives.
Why it matters
The proposal links equal opportunity in education not only to access to classrooms and teachers, but also to the physical conditions in which children arrive at school. Bringing nutritional support and agricultural production together within the same policy framework puts the prospect of directing public procurement toward farmers and cooperatives in Anadolu on the agenda. The cost, described as covering 17 million children and amounting to less than one percent of the central government budget, raises the question of how resources will be planned, as well as the scope of the implementation. Open questions include which budget items will finance it, which standards will be used to prepare the meals nationwide, and how distribution will be supervised.
