The US Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out attacks on targets allegedly belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps across Iran on Tuesday evening, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and in southern regions. Iranian media reported that explosions were heard on Qeshm Island, in Sirik, Bandar Abbas, Asaluyeh, Chabahar and Konarak, and that Jiroft Airport in Kerman was targeted. Ahmed Nafisi, deputy governor of Hormozgan, announced that a residence where a wedding was being held in Kuhestak had been hit, killing at least 4 people and injuring 68. It was reported that 7 people were killed and 8 injured in Khuzestan. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had shot down a US MQ-9-type UAV. The Iranian army said it had retaliated with missiles and UAVs against US bases in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq. Jordan reported that it had intercepted 10 of 13 ballistic missiles, while 3 fell in uninhabited areas. Kuwait and Bahrain activated their air defenses. Some airlines canceled flights to Jordan. While CENTCOM announced that the attacks had been completed, sirens also sounded in northern Israel.
Why it matters
The development shows that the military tension between the US and Iran has not remained confined to the two countries, but has also directly drawn Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq, where US bases are located, into the security equation. Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain’s use of their air defenses indicates that the retaliation created simultaneous pressure on regional defense systems. Flight cancellations and reports of fatalities involving residences make visible the impact of military activity on civilians and transportation. However, as the parties’ statements regarding the targets, the downed UAV and the results of the attacks have not been independently verified, the scope of the damage and the full course of events remain unclear. Although CENTCOM reported that the operation had ended, the sirens in northern Israel reveal that the security alert has spread across a wider geography.
