The Turkish women’s national volleyball team became European champions by defeating Italy 3-2 in the final of the Trendyol 2026 CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship. The opening part of the match was played at 6-6, but Italy opened up a lead of up to 9 points and took the first set 25-16. Turkey fell 12-6 behind in the second set, then closed the gap with a 5-0 run led by Vargas; after taking the lead with Zehra Güneş’s block, they won the set 25-22. Italy started the third set with a 6-0 run, sparked by Fahr’s block, to make the score 8-2, and completed the set 25-12. Turkey won the fourth set 25-21 with Vargas’s placement shot. The national team won the deciding set 15-10 after dominating it from start to finish, securing the championship. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the team through his NSosyal account.

Why it matters

While this result once again demonstrates Turkey’s competitive strength in European women’s volleyball, it also highlights the importance of being able to reassert oneself in a high-pressure match such as a final. Despite allowing their opponent to take control at different stages, the team’s persistence shows that the championship was determined not only by technical ability but also by in-match cohesion and resilience. The match going to five sets underscores the balance between the two teams and the high level of competition in the final. President Erdoğan’s congratulatory message shows that the European championship has also received official recognition; however, the report leaves open the impact of this achievement on the team’s subsequent goals and its position after the tournament.
