2026 Retro Computer Contest: A Homebuilt Computer Made with Only Three ICs
Microchips on the circuit board

Just4Fun’s 68008-based, through-hole assembled 68k-MBC computer supports CP/M68K or standalone executables with full and lite hardware options. The lite version uses three integrated components:

  • 68008
  • SRAM chip
  • PIC microcontroller serving as ROM

The lite configuration is limited to 512 KB of RAM and a single serial port; I2C, SD “hard drive,” and RTC module options are available. The full version has two serial ports, and printer connectivity is also possible with a parallel adapter. Competition entries close on October 27.

Why it matters

This project demonstrates how a 68k-based computer can be built with a limited number of essential components, showing how simplicity and functionality can be addressed together in hardware design. The different configurations show that the same core design can be adapted to needs such as memory capacity, serial communication, storage, and timekeeping. Support for CP/M68K and standalone executables indicates that the project focuses not only on assembling the circuitry but also on a usable software environment. For this reason, the project is relevant not only to those interested in homebrew computers but also to developers working with older processor architectures. The open question is which aspects of this design the competition entries will highlight and how the project will resonate with similar efforts.
