Permission to use the Twitter name denied to new social media platform: Its name is now “Tweet.App”

Operation Bluebird’s attempt to revive the Twitter brand has turned into a lawsuit with X Corp. A federal court in Delaware temporarily halted use of the “Twitter” name, deeming the phrase “Welcome to X (formerly known as Twitter)” in X’s App Store description to constitute active use. However, citing X’s abandonment of the “Tweet” name and blue bird logo in 2023, the court rejected the request for an injunction concerning those marks. The venture, which applied for “TWITTER” and “TWEET” in December 2025, continued its platform under the name “Tweet.App.” President Stephen Coates stated that there was no connection with X Corp. The queue and account rights of more than 172 thousand users were protected; early access is available through a paid membership.

Why it matters

The decision establishes an important benchmark for trademark management by digital platforms, showing that a mark’s appearance in an app store description may be considered active use by a court. However, restricting the use of the former name does not mean that the platform’s other identity elements from the past automatically return; the court assessed those elements differently. The development directly concerns both parties defending trademark rights associated with X Corp. and users whose queue and account rights are protected on the new platform. However, because the decision is temporary, it remains unclear which names and marks may legally be used in the final proceedings and how existing user rights will be affected by these changes.

Background

Twitter is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: we published a news article mentioning this name in the last 90 days; that article is dated 5 September 2026.
