WhatsApp will allow people without an account on the platform to join calls
Person using a laptop

WhatsApp has announced a guest call feature that will allow people who do not have an account on the platform to join calls. Voice and video calls are supported. Since the approval of the person initiating the call is required, guests will be able to join voice and video calls directly from their browser using the link sent to them. Group calls are limited to 32 people. The company also plans to roll out Google Calendar and Outlook integration later in the year.

Why it matters

This step can be read as a move to take WhatsApp beyond being a messaging app and turn it into a calling tool that requires no installation. Allowing people who do not want to download the app or create an account to join via a browser could expand its use, particularly in one-off business meetings, family connections, and meetings with external stakeholders. The approval requirement for the person initiating the call leaves control with the meeting host against the link being used by unwanted parties. The 32-person cap, meanwhile, shows that the feature targets small and medium-sized calls rather than large-scale online events. If the planned Google Calendar and Outlook integrations materialize, the invitation process could be handled through the calendar; however, it is currently unclear when these integrations will be made available.
