In the corruption investigation carried out by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer were arrested by a criminal judgeship of peace.
Simultaneous operations were carried out at the three municipalities on October 1; 59 people were detained, and the number of suspects later rose to 60. The suspects were taken to the courthouse on October 5; 50 of them were referred to the judgeship with a request for arrest, and 10 with a request for judicial control.
It was alleged that irregularities were identified in 13 direct procurement and tender files of the Metropolitan Municipality, and that the purchases carried Seçer’s “approval.” Private Office Director Doğukan Uyan had been arrested in the earlier operation.
A separate investigation is also being conducted against Tuncer on the charge of “leading an armed criminal organization,” over allegations that he ordered armed attacks on the Yeni Parti Mersin provincial headquarters and the workplace of a media outlet. Courthouse procedures for the other suspects are ongoing.
Why it matters
The arrests have left Mersin’s metropolitan municipality and two central district municipalities effectively leaderless at the same time; how these seats will be filled and whether city services will continue without disruption is the concrete question of the coming days. The investigation’s reach extending to 60 suspects and 13 tender files shows that the case targets a broader scheme not limited to the three mayors. At this stage, it should be kept in mind that the accusations rest on the prosecutor’s findings and that the real test will come during the trial process. The allegation of leading an armed organization against Tuncer, meanwhile, carries the case beyond the corruption framework, opening a separate front where politics and violence intersect. As the situation of the other suspects, whose courthouse procedures are ongoing, becomes clearer, the true scope of the investigation will also emerge.
