US President Donald Trump announced that he has established a new task force he calls the “Super Intelligence Force.” The announcement was made from Trump’s Truth Social account on Sunday morning.

Trump stated that the task force is charged with coordinating federal government efforts to ensure the US maintains its world leadership in super intelligence. Describing this technology as “bigger than even the Industrial Revolution and the internet,” Trump said the force would protect the interests of all Americans.

In September, Trump announced that he would establish an AI force and appoint an AI czar in response to the AI safety debate, which he described as a hoax concocted by “Radical Left Democrats,” saying, “Only people with high IQ can apply!” Since then, Trump has signed an executive order aimed at renaming AI as “super intelligence.” The term also appears to have been adopted by technology executives who signed a non-binding safety commitment at the White House this week.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the task force will be chaired by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, which will effectively make him the new AI/super intelligence czar. The vice chairs will be Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.

The task force will have 120 days to prepare a report on the risks and opportunities of AI. Arguing that it would be irresponsible for the US to “hold back” on AI while countries like China advance, Clayton said the biggest risk is “not being first.” The task force’s charter includes the goal of “preventing overregulation that would stifle innovation and competition, as well as regulatory capture” while developing plans to respond to threats stemming from super intelligence.
