Following a complaint submitted to Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Adviser at Ticaret Bakanlığı (Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade), three listings advertising multiple Tesla Model Y vehicles at prices higher than new-car prices were inspected. In the first vehicle, listed at 2,703,465 TL, it was determined that a lifetime Full Self-Driving (FSD / Fully Autonomous Driving) option costing 228,480 TL had been added to the base price of 2,474,985 TL, and that the total matched the listing price; no penalty was imposed. In the second vehicle, listed at 2,645,000 TL, it was determined that there was no additional equipment or accessory and that the price was excessively 170,015 TL higher than the dealer price; a decision was made to impose an administrative fine on the dealership / company. The third listing, posted by an individual seller at 2,750,000 TL, was removed after the seller was asked to lower the price. The ministry said that scans of the platforms were continuing both in response to complaints and ex officio.
Why it matters
The inspection shows that, in listings for new vehicles, the total price above the list price is not by itself a sufficient criterion; whether the additional equipment actually exists is also examined. This distinction increases the importance of comparing different prices for the same model from the buyer’s perspective and of ensuring the accuracy of listing information. For dealerships and individual sellers, however, the enforcement process may not work in the same way: while an administrative fine decision was made in one listing, the process in the other ended with the price being lowered and the listing removed. The ministry’s scans in response to complaints and on its own initiative show that online vehicle listings can be examined not only following notifications but also ex officio. The open question is under what conditions a particular price difference in similar listings will result in enforcement action.
