Modern tower speaker with lights

Sony has announced three new tower-style party speakers that will be the largest options in its ULT Power Sound series: ULT Tower Max, ULT Tower 7 and ULT Tower 5. The models feature USB-C, RCA and XLR connections for wired audio equipment. Up to 100 LED lights provide visual notifications for functions such as battery status and Bluetooth pairing, while also creating music-synchronized light shows.

The largest model in the series, the $1,499.99 Tower Max, weighs 121 pounds and includes four tweeters, two midrange drivers and three 280mm woofers. Sony says this model delivers the most powerful bass experience in the series. The 50-pound, $649.99 Tower 7 can run for up to 30 hours with its LEDs turned off, featuring a single 280mm woofer, two midrange drivers and four tweeters. The 29-pound, $449.99 Tower 5 offers up to 20 hours of playback with a 230mm woofer, two midrange drivers and two tweeters.

All three models have four redesigned carrying handles. The Tower Max and Tower 7 feature wider wheels. Users can also adjust the EQ settings of the ULT1, ULT2 and Flat sound profiles.

Why it matters

The new series offers users looking for party speakers different options not only in terms of sound output but also in how the speakers are set up and used. The inclusion of USB-C, RCA and XLR connections allows the devices to be used with wired audio equipment beyond wireless pairing. Differences in weight, battery life and price among the models require users to choose between portability and expectations for high volume. The carrying handles and wider wheels on some models are intended to make positioning speakers of this size easier. The key question that remains is the extent to which users will use the sound profile settings and lighting features, as these preferences can directly affect battery life and the intended use of the device.
