Snapchat may introduce a “time limit” for young people: “It would be helpful”

Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel said they were willing to introduce default time limits for young users on Snapchat at Meta’s call. Spiegel said he believed this step would be beneficial across the industry.

Meta made the following commitments as part of the settlement concluded on August 26:

  • Introduce daily usage limits for young users and restrictions blocking use at night.
  • Implement age-verification measures.
  • Offer parents and guardians additional online safety tools.

The EU, meanwhile, announced plans to ban social media use by children under 13.

Why it matters

This development is bringing the debate over limiting young people’s social media use across the industry, rather than leaving it solely to individual preferences and also addressing platforms’ default designs. The usage time, nighttime access, age verification and parental tools raised under the settlement show that greater responsibility for children’s online safety is shifting to platforms. While this framework directly concerns young users, parents and social media companies in particular, the EU’s plan for those under 13 also adds an age-limit dimension to the debate. The unresolved issue is which age groups the restrictions to be implemented across different platforms will cover and how parental controls and regulatory limits will operate together.
