New Strategy in the Entry-Level Watch Market

Samsung is preparing to change its entry-level product strategy in the wearable technology field. According to information obtained by examining the code of the Samsung Health and Galaxy Wearable apps, the company is developing a new wearable device codenamed Galaxy Aero. With this model, the company aims to eliminate the negative impression created by the Galaxy Watch FE, which failed to attract the expected level of interest in the market, and restore the price-performance balance.

Preference for RTOS Over Wear OS

The main feature highlighted in the leaks was the operating system to be used in the device. It was determined that the product will run on a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) instead of Google’s Wear OS platform. The galaxy_rtos_watch expression and Galaxy Aero identifiers found in the application code reveal details about the device’s software infrastructure. The use of RTOS provides much lower energy consumption compared with the Wear OS architecture. This choice is expected to enable the device to offer a battery life of at least 7 days to several weeks on a single charge.

Pricing and Product Positioning

The model, which is expected to feature an accelerometer, gyroscope and heart-rate sensors, will be positioned at a price level between the Galaxy Fit series and the Galaxy Watch FE. In return for reducing costs and extending battery life, support for the Google Play Store and access to third-party apps will be kept limited. While flagship smartwatches such as the Apple Watch and Pixel Watch compete in the premium segment, Samsung is directly challenging Huawei and Amazfit’s market share in the budget-friendly wearable devices category with this move.

Market Expectations and Next Steps

Leaked information confirms that the device will take the form of a watch with a display; however, it has not yet been finalized whether the display will be circular or square. Galaxy Aero is believed to be an internal codename rather than the final commercial name. The combination of a low-cost hardware architecture and long battery life is expected to offer a direct alternative in the budget-focused wearable technology market.
