Reddit announced that it will shut down RSS feeds, citing large-scale data scraping and automated abuse by AI bots. The company said RSS support would end on November 13. It drew attention that revenue Reddit generated from user content had gained importance through AI licensing agreements; the company had reported that its non-advertising revenue rose 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter.
Moderators who use RSS in alert systems were advised to switch to the Discord Relay Devvit app. Reddit asked teams to migrate their workflows before November 13; however, it offered no alternative for RSS uses outside moderator communities. Some moderators were concerned that the change would make their workflows more difficult, while users feared that the ways they access Reddit content would be disrupted.
The company also announced that public API access would be removed in March 2027. The change will affect social listening tools, researchers, and AI products that provide programmatic access to Reddit conversations. AI assistants will have to enter into commercial agreements with the company to continue using Reddit data.
Reddit also provided updates on Rules Hub and automated moderation changes. Additional restrictions will be imposed on access to Old Reddit on the grounds of “Abusive scraping and automated traffic.” In the coming months, this version will be available only to people who are logged in and have used Old Reddit within the past 6 months; the period had previously been stated as 90 days.
Those developing approved third-party apps and bots were asked to register before January 12, 2027. Reddit will remove API access for developers who are not registered after that date.
Why it matters
The decision changes how tools that monitor or process Reddit content outside the platform operate; in particular, social listening services, researchers and AI products will need a commercial relationship with the company instead of direct access. While the proposed transition path for moderation teams remains limited to a specific use case, it is still unclear how other RSS users will continue their workflows. This approach reveals that user posts are also being managed by Reddit as a licensable source of revenue. The introduction of a registration requirement for third-party app and bot developers shows that technical integration with the platform is being tied to access conditions. As a result, the debate is focused not only on the shutdown of RSS, but also on who will continue to have access for research, monitoring and AI use, and within what commercial framework.
