He is also the founder of the nonprofit Alignment Research Center (ARC), which works on advanced AI systems aligned with human interests. From 2017 to 2021, he led alignment research at OpenAI and contributed to work on reinforcement learning from human feedback.
His appointment is based on the governance framework established by the restructuring in October 2025. As part of his role as a senior technical adviser, Christiano will recuse himself from all matters related to OpenAI and model evaluations.
