Winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine announced

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to American Karl Deisseroth, German Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their discoveries in light-sensitive ion channels and optogenetics. The Nobel Committee stated that optogenetics enables the functions of individual nerve cells in the living brain to be controlled. The total prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor (1.2 million dollars).

Why it matters

The approach behind the award offers a research framework based on testing the functions of individual nerve cells in a controlled manner, rather than merely observing brain activity. This makes it possible to distinguish which cell contributes to which function in interconnected brain processes and to examine the relationship between cell activity and the resulting outcomes. The development expands the scope of the methods used particularly by neuroscience researchers working on the living brain. At the same time, the fundamental question that remains open is to what extent control of individual cells will be sufficient to explain the brain’s more complex functions involving large numbers of cells. The scientific rationale for the award highlights this aspect of optogenetics, which extends from observation to controlled intervention.

Background

Nobel is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: we published a news article mentioning this name in the past 90 days; that article is dated 5 September 2026.
