Netanyahu: I do not aim for conflict with Türkiye, but I do not want them in southern Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in remarks to Israeli television that he did not want a direct confrontation with Türkiye, but that Israel must continuously increase its military capabilities.

Netanyahu said they had decided to establish a “security zone” in Syria and expressed opposition to Türkiye advancing farther south. Saying that this message had been conveyed through the United States and directly to the authorities in Damascus, Netanyahu stated that after the warnings went unheeded, they targeted a military airfield in Syria “by kinetic means.” Israeli fighter jets had carried out 8 separate strikes on Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase east of Idlib.

Why it matters

These remarks show that the military and political tensions between Israel and Türkiye in the Syrian theater are being managed through reciprocal moves without a direct confrontation taking place. Israel’s declaration of a security zone indicates that its objection to Türkiye advancing south is not limited to bilateral relations, and that the military presence and airspace in Syria are also part of this tension. The warnings conveyed through the United States and directly to Damascus show that messages delivered to the actors on the ground are moving between diplomatic channels and military intervention, while the attack on Abu al-Duhur provides a concrete example of how these messages are being implemented. However, the remarks do not clarify the boundaries of the security zone, how Türkiye’s advance south would be assessed, or how Damascus would respond to the warnings.
