The Güran family’s request for the murder file of 8-year-old Narin Güran, whose body was found 19 days after she went missing in Diyarbakır on August 21, 2024, to be re-examined as an unsolved case was rejected.
In its review, the Ministry of Justice compared statements by family members and alternative scenarios with the existing evidence, expert reports and court rulings. It was stated that no new and concrete finding warranting a renewed examination of the file had been identified, while it was reported that the aggravated life imprisonment sentences handed down to three defendants had been upheld by the Court of Cassation.
Why it matters
The decision maintains the assessment that there is no new and concrete basis for reopening the file as part of the Ministry of Justice’s review. As a result, the weight of the family members’ statements and alternative scenarios in relation to the existing evidence, expert reports and court rulings has not been reopened for debate. The fact that the Court of Cassation upheld the aggravated life imprisonment sentences imposed on the three defendants also reinforces the file’s existing judicial framework. However, the rejection of the application does not eliminate the objections of the relatives, who argue that all aspects of the incident have not been fully clarified; it is stated, though, that no concrete finding was identified in the process reported by the news that could lead to these objections being re-examined.
