Mother suing Meta says, ‘My daughter was killed because of Instagram’
A glowing phone in a dark room

Coco’s mother, Arnold, said that her daughter, whose Turkish name is Dilara Konar, was poisoned and died after taking a fentanyl-containing pill that she believed was prescription medication, following the direction of someone she met on Instagram.

Arnold said social media platforms are designed to keep children online constantly, adding that young people face risks such as blackmail, cyberbullying, dangerous challenges and sexual assault. She argued that algorithms can lead to depression and anxiety by amplifying disturbing content.

Arnold said Coco, who had attention deficit disorder, eventually became unable to put down her phone, while efforts to limit her use proved unsuccessful because security measures were bypassed. She said parents cannot fight the systems developed by technology companies on their own and that families need support.

Why it matters

This incident shows that children’s online safety cannot be ensured solely through parents’ efforts to monitor them. Particularly for young people with attention deficit disorder who have difficulty putting down their phones, the fact that usage restrictions can become ineffective when security measures are bypassed increases the difficulty parents face. The emergence of risks such as blackmail, cyberbullying, dangerous challenges and sexual assault on the same platforms highlights the importance of knowing whom children are communicating with and what content they are being directed toward. The mother’s lawsuit against Meta also raises the question of the extent to which platforms are responsible for their algorithms and user safety. This debate requires examining the adequacy of companies’ safety systems, alongside family support.
