A new emulator called Clicky aims to emulate the Apple iPod’s click wheel and the device’s software. The project was developed as a challenging undertaking due to the iPod’s closed architecture and limited technical documentation.
Clicky can currently boot RetailOS; it also runs Rockbox and iPodLinux. While Apple Diagnostics is not yet available, basic functions such as USB communication and audio have not been completed either. Despite this, the emulator can run the Brick Breaker game.
Why it matters
The framework presented by Clicky shows that not only the iPod’s physical design but also its various software layers can be examined in an independent environment. Particularly for those interested in legacy device software and alternative systems, this provides a concrete example of how a closed and sparsely documented platform can be analyzed. The emulator’s ability to run multiple systems demonstrates that the project goes beyond emulating a single software version, while the lack of basic communication and audio functions currently limits its use cases. The open question is not whether support for Apple Diagnostics, USB, and audio will be added, but in which scenarios the emulator can be used practically without these functions.
