RHINOSHIELD, in collaboration with Sent Into Space, released an AirX-cased iPhone 17 Pro from an altitude of 30,607 metres at the Esrange Space Center in Sweden. The phone was exposed to temperatures between -40°C and -60°C without additional protective or heating equipment and reached the ground in approximately 25 minutes.
A Guinness World Records official confirmed that the device’s basic functions worked fully. Thus, RHINOSHIELD secured the official record in the “Highest Drop of a Mobile Phone in a Phone Case” category.
Why it matters
The test demonstrates that phone case performance can be tested not only through everyday drops but also under unusual conditions such as high altitude and extreme cold. The Guinness World Records verification shows that the result was based not only on the physical drop but also on the device retaining its basic functions. Thus, the role of the case becomes part of the discussion on durability under challenging environmental conditions, beyond protecting the phone against mechanical impacts. However, it remains unclear whether this result applies to different phone models, cases, or other temperature and altitude conditions; the verification presented in the report documents only the scope of this specific test.
