The 91st hearing of the İBB case, involving 436 defendants, 57 of whom are detained, including presidential candidate and İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, began in the new courtroom at the Marmara Closed Prison Complex in Silivri.
The questioning by attorneys of Murat Abbas, the former General Manager of Kültür A.Ş., who gave testimony under the scope of effective remorse, is ongoing. Following the statements, the court is expected to consider the detained defendants’ requests for release.
Why it matters
The fact that the hearing is still at the attorney-questioning stage shows that the court is seeking to complete the existing statements before moving on to its assessment of the defendants’ detention status. For this reason, the development directly concerns the detained defendants and their attorneys, while also showing the public following the case which stage of the trial has been reached. The questioning continuing after the statement given under the scope of effective remorse means that the defense has not yet completed its questions regarding that testimony. The key issue that remains open is how the court will assess the requests for release to be submitted after the questioning process ends and when it will begin that assessment.
