Thoreau BASIC can boot via UEFI on modern x86 computers while remaining compatible with older GW-BASIC code, or it can be used under Windows. Programs can be compiled for Windows or UEFI x86 systems.
- 64-bit memory and multithreading support
- 24-bit graphics at resolutions supported by the display
- File management
- Graphics commands with sprite support
- Mouse and keyboard input
- 32-channel audio
The non-open-source project is available on Itch.io under a “pay what you want” model.
Why it matters
This approach allows users with GW-BASIC code to preserve the same language structure while bringing their existing work to modern x86 hardware. Support for memory, threading, graphics, audio, and input makes the project usable not only as a compatibility tool for running older programs but also for more comprehensive applications. The option to compile directly for Windows and UEFI environments makes it easier to adapt the same codebase to different operating modes. On the other hand, the closed-source nature of the project limits users’ ability to examine, modify, and independently develop the system. The available information does not make clear to what extent older GW-BASIC programs can be ported without issues or what application differences exist between the two target environments.
Background
BASIC is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: we published a news article mentioning the name in the last 90 days; that article was dated August 27, 2026.
