Keanu Reeves is reportedly in talks to star in The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, a James Wan-directed remake of the South Korean action film. The film is a Paramount Pictures production. A reimagining of the 2019 South Korean film of the same name, the project also plans for Don Lee, the star of the original film, to return as the same character. If a deal is reached, the two actors will share the lead roles.

The original film was met with acclaim. Premiering in the midnight screenings of the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, the film tells the story of a police officer and a crime syndicate leader who reluctantly join forces to catch a serial killer.

The film, which Wan is also producing, will mark the director’s first feature-length directorial effort since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The producing team is extensive. Producers include Jason Blum and Michael Clear, as well as Don Lee, Sylvester Stallone, D. Matt Geller, Chris S. Lee, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The screenplay was written by Eric Pearson.

Reeves most recently appeared in Outcome, released on Apple TV. He also voiced Duke Caboom. Following that character in Toy Story 5, he will voice Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which will be released on March 19, 2027.

Why it matters

Hollywood’s interest in South Korean cinema continues as yet another production that premiered at Cannes and drew acclaim comes to the fore with a remake. The return of Don Lee, the lead of the original film, as the same character is a sign of the remake’s effort to preserve its connection to the source and build recognition among international audiences. The extensive producing team, stretching from Jason Blum to Sylvester Stallone, along with the Paramount imprint, points to the project’s studio-level weight. For James Wan, the film represents a fresh start in directing following Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Given Reeves’s recent schedule, packed with series and voice work, the potential deal could also shape the actor’s calendar; however, the fact that talks are still at the negotiation stage leaves open the question of whether the deal will be finalized.
