Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega is planning to run for the FIFA presidency against Gianni Infantino in next year’s elections. Vega has become the first name to announce his intention to challenge Infantino, who had been expected to run unopposed for re-election.

Infantino’s reputation had been damaged following the failure of a plan to sell stakes in future tournament revenues to private investors. The plan had sparked outrage in the football world; quarters such as UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation had called for his resignation. Infantino, for his part, had insisted that he was determined to lead FIFA.

The former Swiss centre-back, who also played for Watford and Celtic, worked in the finance sector after retiring from football in 2004. Vega promises to reunite the global football family and restore trust, and wants to modernize FIFA in a manner befitting the 21st century. Describing football as being “in intensive care,” Vega said the institution needs a new direction and root-and-branch reform.
