80% of Congaree National Park in South Carolina lies in the Congaree River floodplain. Erosion and sediment deposition along the river’s bends form oxbow lakes over time. Weston Lake in the park is 1.2 miles (1.9 kilometers) from the visitor center, while Bates Old River is approximately 4 miles long. Frequent flooding carries nutrient-rich silt into the forest, enabling very large trees to grow. The area was designated a national monument in 1976 and a national park in 2003.
