OpenAI is integrating its ChatGPT Health service with the Epic electronic health record system, which stores data on more than 325 million patients. This will allow clinicians to import patient data, ask questions to AI, and summarize appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist reports. In some systems, ChatGPT will also enable users to prepare pre-visit reviews and clinical timelines without leaving the patient file.

The integration provides read-only access to health records; the AI cannot write data to the records. OpenAI also announced the Healthcare Public Data app, which can retrieve information from sources such as ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. The app was said to help combine information on clinical trial eligibility, drug identifiers, coverage policies, and provider records.

Organizations with a Business Associate Agreement will be able to use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors in their workspaces for compliant workflows. OpenAI announced last month that it had made ChatGPT for Health available to all U.S. consumers and that 300 million health-related questions were being asked each week. The company emphasizes that AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment.

OpenAI was reported to have examined the responses of more than 4,300 physicians across 27 clinical use cases and found 99.1% of the responses to be safe. However, a pastor in Florida sued the company, alleging that ChatGPT provided an almost fatal recommendation; in May, a user’s family also filed a lawsuit alleging incorrect dosage advice.

Why it matters

The integration makes it easier for healthcare professionals to review different types of records within a single workflow while limiting the role of AI to that of an assistant that does not replace clinical decision-making. Although the system’s read-only access prevents automatic changes to patient records, it leaves open the question of how the resulting summaries and responses will be reviewed. The plugin, which combines publicly available health data, brings sources consulted in areas such as clinical research and drug information into the same workflow, making checks for accuracy and currency important. Although OpenAI’s safety assessments present a positive picture, allegations of incorrect dosages and dangerous recommendations show that the use of AI in healthcare does not eliminate legal and safety risks.
