The first step toward forming a left-wing coalition in Berlin has been taken, and the possibility of Elif Eralp becoming state premier has also come onto the agenda. An agreement has been reached on the talks. Following the state parliament elections on September 20, the Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD agreed to enter into direct coalition talks. Elif Eralp of the Left Party, Werner Graf of the Greens, and Steffen Krach of the SPD presented the agreement titled “More Together, More Berlin” at a press conference.

The rent crisis comes first. Eralp announced that to solve the rent crisis, which they regard as the most important problem, they will submit an expropriation law to parliament in 2028, and that companies owning more than 10 thousand housing units will be covered. Stating that they will fight antisemitism, she promised to protect Jews.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on the Greens and the SPD not to form a coalition with the Left Party, while Krach stated that Merz should first get his own government under control. Eralp said she was leaving the decision to Berliners.

The approval process has now begun. The SPD will decide at a party executive meeting on October 19, after which the Greens will vote at a meeting on October 19 attended by 49 delegates. The Left Party will vote at its state party congress on October 31.

The goal is to form the government by the end of the year. If approval is granted, the aim is for coalition talks to begin in early November and for the government to be formed by the end of the year. Eralp, the candidate of the Left Party, which finished the election in first place with 25.7 percent of the vote, will become Berlin’s state premier if the coalition is formed.
