Bahçeli conveyed a “peace process” message to his party’s Diyarbakır congress: We will think of future generations instead of future elections
The historic On Gözlü Köprü in Diyarbakır

MHP Diyarbakır Provincial Directorate’s 15th Ordinary Congress elected sole candidate Hasan Özcoşkun as provincial chair. A message from MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli was read at the congress.

Bahçeli said that the “Terror-Free Turkey” vision was of historic importance not only for security but also for strengthening fraternity and national unity. Saying that they would act out of love of the homeland rather than concern over votes, Bahçeli said, “We will think not about the next elections, but about future generations.”

Why it matters

The leadership change at the congress makes it necessary to monitor MHP’s organizational direction in Diyarbakır and which issues it will prioritize in local politics. Bahçeli’s message broadens the party’s political framework by addressing its security-centered approach together with an emphasis on fraternity and national unity. The rhetoric of steering clear of concerns over votes and focusing on future generations also raises the question of how the party leadership is choosing between short-term electoral calculations and long-term political goals. However, it is not clear from the information presented at the congress how this approach will be reflected in the party’s activities in Diyarbakır, the language of local politics and its relationship with voters. Therefore, the development points to a political direction whose implementation will need to be monitored and that is not limited solely to the appointment of a new provincial chair.
