Meta Makes New Move Following Growing Privacy Concerns: Camera-Free Smart Glasses Are Coming

According to The Information, Meta’s camera-free Luna smart glasses are expected to be unveiled on September 23 and 24, with shipments beginning in October. Designed to resemble ordinary glasses, the device will be offered in Clubmaster and Burbank variants with slimmer temples. It will feature six microphones and speakers that direct sound straight to the ears. A side button will provide access to Meta’s AI chatbot and its new consumer AI agent, Muse. The camera had sparked controversy because it was difficult to tell when it was recording and the LED indicator could be disabled. Meta released an update that also stopped the camera when the indicator was turned off. Luna will be aimed at users who do not want a camera.

Why it matters

Luna’s positioning shows that the use of cameras in smart glasses is not merely a technical choice, but also an issue involving user trust and the privacy of people nearby. While a camera-free design aims to ease these concerns, it preserves the interaction offered through the glasses’ AI chatbot and Muse. The product is therefore directly relevant to users who want the smart glasses experience but wish to avoid the possibility of video recording; it also demonstrates how manufacturers are responding to privacy debates. However, even with the camera removed, how users will view features such as microphones and direct sound transmission remains an open question that could determine Luna’s acceptance.
