Google is working on a feature that would allow emergency assistance calls to be initiated on Android phones by voice command without touching the screen. According to Android Authority, traces indicating that this function is being developed were found in code related to Android’s security features. In the system, which is still under development, the process could be initiated by the user saying the word “Help” three times. The user would then be able to confirm or cancel the operation by voice command.
In addition to emergency assistance calls, the method is also planned to initiate options such as location sharing and emergency video recording. On Android phones, emergency assistance calls can currently be made by pressing certain buttons consecutively. It is not yet known when Google will make the new feature available. The company may change the system during the development process or decide not to release the feature at all.
Why it matters
This work shows an effort to add a voice option to the existing button-based method for scenarios in which physically accessing the phone during emergencies is not possible. Designing the process with multiple command and confirmation steps aims to manage operations such as location sharing and video recording within the same flow, in addition to initiating an emergency call. For this reason, the development indicates that Android’s security tools are moving toward a structure that can transmit additional emergency-related information rather than being limited to initiating calls. However, the traces seen in the code do not confirm that the feature will be made available to users. It is not yet clear whether it will be released or which details will change during the development process.
