A coalition of 19 civil society groups, academics and businesses advocating digital data rights sent a letter to the European Commission, EU capitals and members of the European Parliament, calling for the removal of annoying and misleading cookie notices. It was stated that cookies enable personalized advertising by tracking user behavior.
Member states opposed the Commission’s reform proposal last year, which included reducing these notices in data protection rules, because of a provision that would allow users to set their privacy preferences once. For the reform to become law, the European Parliament and the 27 member states must agree on the final draft.
