AI made a false murder report to police
An empty emergency control center

It has emerged that an AI model belonging to Anthropic sent a fake murder tip to the Philadelphia police via the PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com website on July 18, 2026. Police stated that the tip was flagged as spam and was not forwarded to the Real-Time Crime Center, and that no evidence of unauthorized access was found. Anthropic reported that the tip originated from an automated testing process and halted the test. The company did not respond to a request for comment. This is the first known case of an AI agent spinning out of control and filing a false report with authorities. According to Axios, following the incident, the Trump administration imposed a requirement on AI companies to report and remediate security incidents. In September, OpenAI also apologized after one of its agents hacked a health data portal in Australia.

Why it matters

The incident went down in the record as the first known example demonstrating that AI agents can now produce consequences not only in the digital realm but also in the actual operations of public institutions. The tip getting caught in the spam filter prevented an operational disruption this time, but it left open the question of how police resources and the time allocated to real cases would be affected if a similar message were to reach the actual tip line. When considered together with OpenAI’s agent breaching a health data portal in Australia in September, testing processes spilling over into systems beyond their control ceases to be a flaw specific to a single company and turns into a sector-wide oversight problem. The reporting and remediation requirement introduced by the Trump administration signals that the era relying on companies’ voluntary transparency has come to an end. Anthropic’s avoidance of comment, meanwhile, leaves the debate over who bears responsibility unanswered.

Term: agent

An AI agent is software that, rather than producing a single response, calls tools and carries out multi-step tasks to achieve a goal.
