A Free Cloud AI
A laptop screen and a work desk

A new option has emerged for those who want an AI-powered personal assistant but do not want to entrust their data to opaque cloud systems: talorys, developed by rociiu, is an AI agent that runs in the user’s own Cloudflare account. Its code is open on GitHub; the data is also kept in the user’s own cloud environment. Its promotion includes the phrase “free-tier friendly, no telemetry,” but the code has not been independently reviewed. Since the data still resides in the cloud, privacy concerns are not entirely eliminated; on the other hand, it is possible to download and delete the data and to see the commands that have been used.

What the tool cannot do:

  • It has no calendar integration
  • It cannot handle email
  • It cannot search the web
  • It does not write code

In other words, it is not a general-purpose chatbot; it is positioned as a to-do list, reminder, and note-taking tool.

In the test conducted, three recurring meetings were requested: one was set up correctly, one was entered on Sunday instead of Monday, and the third could not be created because it hit the rate limit. A retry first failed, then returned the response “done,” but no entry appeared. In a later attempt, the missing meeting was added, but the erroneous Sunday entry was not deleted; it was cleaned up manually.

Setup is easy: you can connect your own domain or use the provided pages.dev subdomain; a single command sets up authentication and all the services. Cloudflare’s free tier has daily limits and they can be reached; if such projects become widespread, the limits could be tightened, but data can be exported. When the system works, it works well; it easily finds what it remembers and the notes. Big chatbots can do all of this, but not in your account. Cloudflare’s free resources could also be useful for other projects; the site had previously also touched on Oracle’s free servers.

Why it matters

Talorys makes visible the trade-off between control and capability in AI assistants: big chatbots can do much more, but the data is kept in the company’s account, not the user’s. Its lack of basic functions such as calendar, email, and web search shows that such self-hosted agents cannot, for now, replace general-purpose assistants and are instead positioned in a narrow task-management niche. The recurring meeting errors and the rate-limit hits in the test reveal the reliability gap of projects at this scale. Because the code has not undergone an independent audit, the claim that it contains no telemetry remains unverified. The sustainability of the development, meanwhile, depends on Cloudflare’s free tier policy; the possibility that the limits could be tightened if similar projects become widespread stands as an open question.
