NASA Warning for the October Sky: 3 Events Not to Be Missed
A telescope pointed at the night sky

NASA’s October sky calendar includes numerous events, from a lunar occultation to meteor showers. The calendar also features observing Saturn and watching the Moon approach the Pleiades star cluster. Although some events have already passed, the month is still ongoing.

  • On October 6, Jupiter passed behind the Moon and disappeared from view for about an hour. This event, known as a lunar occultation, was visible from some parts of North America; observation was not possible from Turkey.
  • The Draconid meteor shower peaked on the nights of October 8-9. Taking its name from the constellation Draco, the shower lasted until October 10 and could be observed after dark.
  • The Orionid meteor shower will peak on the night of October 21-22. It originates from debris left by Halley’s Comet. The Moon’s brightness may make faint meteors harder to spot; the best time is the pre-dawn hours after the Moon has set. No telescope is needed; a dark location away from city lights is enough.
  • October closes with the Hunter’s Moon on October 26.
