The Tudor-style childhood home in New York’s Queens borough where Donald Trump lived until the age of 4 has been sold for $1.93 million. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom house, which his contractor father Fred Trump had built in Jamaica Estates in 1940, stood vacant and neglected for years. In addition to water damage and mold caused by a burst pipe, stray cats also took up residence on the property.
Contractor Tommy Lin bought the house for $835 thousand last year and spent $500 thousand on an eight-month renovation. The work added a professional kitchen, herringbone wood floors and spa-style bathrooms. The unidentified buyer signed a contract in July.
According to Zillow data, the house was sold to Trump Birth Home LLC for $2.14 million a few months after Trump became president in 2017 and was briefly rented out on Airbnb. Cardboard cutouts of Trump, along with book and magazine covers, were displayed in the house. The property was listed for sale at $2.9 million in 2019 but remained unsold until Lin acquired it.
Why it matters
The sale shows that properties tied to the personal histories of political figures can change hands not only as residences but also as properties carrying public interest and commercial value. The house’s past use for short-term rentals and its display with images of Trump show that the property had been turned from a personal memento into a presentation centered on visitor interest. However, it remains unclear whether this historical identity will be preserved following the extensive renovation and whether the property will be used again for rental or exhibition purposes. For this reason, the development raises questions both about the change in the property’s value and about how the new owner will make use of a private space identified with a political figure.
