5 candidates to compete in France’s primary to choose the social democrats’ presidential nominee

France’s social democrats will choose their 2027 presidential candidate through a two-round primary. The candidacies of PS General Secretary Olivier Faure, Member of Parliament Jerome Guedj, Emmanuel Maurel, Place Publique Co-President Raphael Glucksmann and Segolene Royal were accepted. PS Member of Parliament Philippe Brun, who is accused of using violence, was rejected despite meeting the requirements. Brun said on X that he was surprised to learn that his candidacy had been suspended as a precaution; he stated that a former employee he had dismissed had reported potentially criminal incidents to management at 23.50, but that he did not know about the allegation. Members will vote via the platform on 9-10 and 16-17 October; non-members will pay 15 euros. The candidacy of former President François Hollande remains uncertain. Hollande said on BFMTV that he was concerned about the possibility of a social and financial crisis and that he would serve his country if he were seen as the solution. The elections will be held on 18 April and 2 May 2027.

Why it matters

Opening the primary to non-party members in exchange for a fee creates a limited channel for voters outside the party organization to participate in determining the social democratic candidate. While the two-round, online voting model allows members and non-members to make their choices on the same platform, the impact of the 15-euro fee on the scope of participation remains uncertain. Philippe Brun’s precautionary exclusion from the process despite meeting the requirements raises questions about the content of the allegations, the method of review and the opportunity to present a defense in decisions on candidacies. François Hollande’s yet-to-be-finalized position also shows that the race’s definitive candidate lineup has not been completed. The process therefore concerns not only the competition among five names, but also how the criteria for accepting candidacies and the participation rules are applied.
