Elon Musk plans to give one SpaceX share to every child across the US. The announcement came from his X account. In a post on his X account, Musk announced that he plans to give one SpaceX share each to every child in the US next year, noting that this would be the first of similar distributions he will carry out.

The number of children is quite high. Approximately 72-73 million children under the age of 18 live in the US, and given that a SpaceX share is worth approximately $146, the total size of the plan could exceed $10.5 billion, which corresponds to 1% of Musk’s fortune of approximately $1 trillion.

Details are not yet clear. Although the details of the distribution have not yet been finalized, the shares are expected to be transferred through tax-advantaged Trump Accounts, which can be opened on behalf of children under 18 who have a Social Security number.

The announcement came after Anthropic’s announcement. Musk’s announcement came after Anthropic announced its plan to transfer 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. Earlier, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell also announced that she plans to donate SpaceX shares to the Trump Accounts of approximately 2 million children.

Why it matters

The plan raises questions about the company’s ownership structure and share transfer mechanism, as it envisages distributing shares of the privately held SpaceX to all children across the US. While the total size is expected to exceed $10.5 billion, that amount corresponds to only 1% of Musk’s fortune of approximately $1 trillion; in other words, the initiative’s symbolic weight appears to outweigh its financial burden. The fact that the announcement came immediately after Anthropic’s plan to transfer 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund points to a visibility race unfolding over wealth sharing in the tech world. Compared with Shotwell’s donation plan covering approximately 2 million children, it is also evident how much the scale has expanded. Although the shares are expected to be transferred through Trump Accounts opened on behalf of children who have a Social Security number, how the distribution will work and who the scope will actually include remain unclear.
