Director of the Dune films explains why his next project is James Bond
Film camera and screenplay

Denis Villeneuve, the director of the Dune films, has explained the reason for choosing James Bond as his next project. He laid out his reasoning to Empire magazine. The director said that to break away from the world of Dune, he needed “a very powerful rocket” to take him away from Arrakis, and noted that he was returning to the series not out of nostalgia but because he was “fed up.” Villeneuve added that the Bond offer was what he needed.

The first Dune film, released in 2021, won 6 Oscars, while Dune: Part Two, which hit theaters in 2024, grossed more than $715 million worldwide and won two Oscars. The trilogy is being completed with Part Three. The crew filmed Part Three, the final film of the trilogy adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1969 Dune Messiah, in July 2025 in the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi and in Hungary, and Robert Pattinson, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, and Ida Brooke joined the cast. The film will be released on December 16, 2026 (December 18 in Turkey).

Amazon MGM Studios announced Villeneuve’s Bond assignment. The announcement came in June 2025. The director had said that he has been watching Bond films with his father since the 1962 film Dr. No. The production team was announced. The film will be the first Bond production under Amazon MGM’s creative control following the joint venture in March 2025, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers, Tanya Lapointe as executive producer, and Steven Knight as screenwriter. Daniel Craig’s successor is not yet known. Among the names mentioned are Jack Lowden and Callum Turner.

Why it matters

The Bond series is preparing a film under Amazon MGM’s creative control for the first time following the joint venture in March 2025; the studio’s choice of director can therefore be regarded as the first concrete indication of the series’ tone going forward. Villeneuve’s taking on two major productions back to back also illustrates the career path of one of the few directors who move between box office-driven franchise films and award-calibre cinema. The emphasis on weariness in his statement reveals the burden placed on the creators of long-running series and shows that directors treat new projects as an escape. The main question the report leaves open is who will succeed Daniel Craig; the names mentioned so far are limited to Jack Lowden and Callum Turner, and there is no official choice yet.
