The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was launched on August 30 from the Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The telescope, which has a primary mirror the same size as Hubble’s, will be able to survey a section of the sky 100 times wider in a single image. Roman, which will operate in orbit around the Sun, is expected to provide more observations of supernovas and planets around other stars.
Why it matters
By combining a mirror the same size as Hubble’s with a much wider field of view, Roman offers a different scale of operation, ranging from observations focused on individual targets to wide surveys of the sky.
