IEEE TryEngineering aims to foster intellectual curiosity in children. Rapid advances in fields such as artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and ocean research make it important for young people to understand these technologies. TryEngineering published the “Tomorrow’s Technology With TryEngineering, Powered by IEEE” STEM book series for children aged 8-12 through Lerner Publishing Group. The books combine age-appropriate explanations, real-life examples and design activities that encourage curiosity and critical thinking; the series is based on e-books and videos on tryengineering.org. The Communications, Computer and Oceanic Engineering societies and the Transportation Electrification Council contributed to the project. The books can be used in the classroom, library or at home.
- Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Smart Technology explores how artificial intelligence works, streaming services, search engines and healthcare services, as well as issues including bias, deepfakes, hallucinations and privacy.
- Communication Technology: From Morse Code to Smartphones covers the history of communication, 6G, space-based networks and careers in aviation and telecommunications.
- Electric Vehicles: Powering the Future of Transportation explains how electric and hybrid vehicles, batteries and smart transportation systems work.
- Ocean Engineering: Protecting Our Ocean Environments examines ocean ecosystems, underwater research, efforts to combat pollution and the protection of the marine environment.
- Semiconductors: The Building Blocks of Modern Electronics introduces semiconductors, conductors and insulators, microchip manufacturing and engineering innovations.
- Signal Power: The Hidden Waves Behind Modern Tech explains types of waves, the signal processing process and careers in the field.
Why it matters
This initiative aims to help children grow into individuals who not only use the technologies they encounter in everyday life, but also question how they work and what consequences they may have. Addressing topics such as bias and privacy in artificial intelligence, new networks in communication, the transformation of transportation and the protection of the oceans within the same framework broadens STEM education from technical knowledge to social questions. The content serves as a shared resource that can be used by teachers, librarians and parents in different learning environments. However, the extent to which the books will practically improve children’s understanding and critical-thinking skills can be assessed only as usage experiences and educational outcomes emerge.
