MediaTek has added the 6 nm Helio G99+ processor to its Helio G series, which is used in affordable entry-level phones. The 4G-supported chip retains two 2.2 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 cores, six 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 cores, and the Mali-G57 MC2 graphics unit. Cat-13 4G modem, dual VoLTE, UFS 2.2 storage, and support for cameras of up to 108 MP also remain.
The main difference between the Helio G99+ and its predecessor lies in memory support. Instead of LPDDR4X’s 4266 Mbps speed limit, the new processor offers support for LPDDR5X memory at up to 5500 Mbps. This change is intended to give manufacturers greater flexibility as supply tightens and costs rise due to declining LPDDR4X production.
Why it matters
This change represents a response to supply pressures on the memory side rather than a complete overhaul of the processor platform in entry-level 4G phones. While declining LPDDR4X production and rising costs are making component selection and production planning more difficult for companies making devices in this segment, LPDDR5X support allows them to use an alternative memory standard. As a result, manufacturers that opt for the Helio G series gain greater room to maneuver in memory sourcing while retaining existing connectivity, storage, and camera features. The extent to which this will be reflected in phones remains unclear, depending on which models manufacturers use this support in and whether they reflect their memory choice in prices or product positioning.
