Cillian Murphy returns to cult zombie franchise: “He’s in the film a lot”

Danny Boyle said the third film in the 28 Years Later trilogy will be made, but that the schedule has not yet been set. The director said the screenplay written by Alex Garland is ready, and jokingly noted that Cillian Murphy will have a major role in the film, although he does not know whether the actor will strip off again. Boyle compared Murphy’s physique during the filming of 28 Days Later to Iggy Pop.

Released in 2025, 28 Years Later became the most successful film in the series, grossing 151 million dollars worldwide against its 60 million dollar budget. Garland also wrote the screenplay for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, released in 2026; although the film received 91% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it underperformed at the box office. This had raised concerns that the third film had been shelved.

Boyle recommended Jack O’Connell for the role of Bond. The director explained that he had left the No Time to Die project due to creative differences and said he was saddened that the story he and John Hodge had developed was shelved. While praising Denis Villeneuve, he also joked about Christopher Nolan.
