Bungie plans to gradually bring back story chapters, locations, and raid content that were removed from Destiny 2 years ago as part of the Destiny Content Vault. The company acknowledged that the decision to remove them approximately six years ago permanently affected players’ trust and gameplay experience. This decision made some purchased expansion packs and their quests inaccessible. All Destiny 2 players will be able to access the reintroduced content. However, due to the technical infrastructure changes made after Beyond Light, the lighting, encounter design, enemy behavior, and combat systems of the campaigns, locations, and raids need to be updated. Bungie says the process will take time and that the content may return in stages.
Why it matters
This decision means that content players lost access to after previously purchasing certain expansion packs and their quests will once again become available. The fact that the return will be open to all Destiny 2 players shows that the content will not be limited to a specific group of players. However, the old chapters cannot simply be reactivated; due to changes in the technical infrastructure, work needs to be done on the content’s visual structure, quest encounters, enemy behavior, and combat system. As a result, the process will involve more than simply unlocking archived content and will require adapting it to the game’s current structure. The key issue that remains unresolved is which content will return, in what order, and when.
